Stuff White People Like

author May 27, 2008

So you wander around the Internet – you’re bored, shopping, wasting time until you have to go somewhere, etc.  Why not fill your time with some worthwhile research.  This may be old news to some of you, but I came across a blog that will provide some valuable research topics.  It’s geared to helping you get greater insight into fitting in with an interesting minority in this country, white people.  Stuff White People Like

I happened across it in search of some modern furniture sites.  Article #79 on Modern Furniture ironically hit the nail on the head.

Community Garden Kick-off Draws a Crowd | Articles & Archives | Lake Highlands

author April 20, 2008

So the local neighborhood has started up a Community Garden – and with all the Earth Day focus, it’s getting a bit of attention.  Joe’s been helping out with the garden, and for that hard work not only was he mentioned in the Dallas Morning News, but he also got his picture (boots and all) on the front page of the neighborhood paper, Lake Highlands People.  Check out the link below to get the full story.

Garden gives Lake Highlands residents a chance to grow | Dallas Morning News | News for Dallas, Texas | Richardson/Lake Highland News

So while the Dallas Morning News didn’t give Joe a chance at more fame with a front page picture – they did include a quote from Joe, where he shows off his mad knowledge of horticulture.  Check out the link below for the full story.

Nearby, Joe Potter, 3, is hoeing on the plot his family shares with the family of his 4-year-old pal, Ava Meierhofer.

“I like vegetables,” Joe said. “We are going to plant them all except for grass. Grass isn’t very good to grow or eat.”

Nikon Capture NX or Adobe Lightroom

author April 19, 2008

So there’s no shortage of photo organizing and editing software available these days, and the choices can make your head hurt just trying to read about them and test them out.  I’ve tried my share of them, too.  I’ve tried using one package for organizing and one for editing, I’ve tried all-in-one packages, etc.  The only real answer I’ve found so far, is there’s no perfect answer.

However, I can tell you there are better answers than others.  Photoshop Elements + Photoshop CS was the solution that I used for a long time, and honestly – it was the best solution for organizing.  Nothing beats Photoshop Elements’ organizing features.  I tried several others for organizing – packages that specialize in just that and claim to be pro-quality digital asset management packages.  Well – they were very full featured, but didn’t have all the convenience features of Elements (Stacking, Version Sets, etc.), and in the end were just annoying to use because of the constant clean-up or additional workflow steps after making edits to images.

DirecTV Tuner for Windows Media Center coming soon?

author April 17, 2008

So this is old news – but hey, it may be great news, so why not bring it up.

If you have yet to be initiated to the Windows Media Center experience, then you’re missing out.  Why?  Well, for TV programming it’s a lot like Tivo – but with more features overall.  Since there’s a whole friggin’ computer behind it, it’s capable of all sorts of things (playing DVD, Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, DivX video, games, etc.).

“Yeah” you say, “but what about my DirecTV?”.  Ah hah – well, there’s the catch.  Apparently there’s no easy way to get anything but ATSC or NTSC TV programming (Over the Air broadcast digital or analog TV).  Of course you can try and get encrypted digital cable going – but for that you have to buy a whole new PC just so it’s got a special chip to allow the playback.  And you can’t build your own for that – those special motherboards are only available to system builders.  Grrrr…

But on the horizon, life just may get a bit better…

D300 On it’s way!

author April 13, 2008

D300Thanks, Mr. Taxman!  Not only do I not need to pay the government an extra bundle of cash this April, but I’m actually getting a bit back.

So the next logical question is what to spend it on, of course!  Well, my old faithful day-one Nikon D100 is getting long in the tooth, so… I’ve ordered up a brand-spanking new Nikon D300 to take over photo-taking duties.  The D100 has served me very well, and is still quite serviceable.  There’s only a couple items that are getting worn out (like the metering mode switch – grrr), but it still takes some great shots of the kiddos - It will stay with us as a backup camera for the rest of the family.

I’m getting all giddy just waiting for the new toy!  Luckily, the Renaissance Festival is going on now, so perhaps this weekend we can pack up the family and take the new cam for a test drive!!

Hey Everybody

Hey look – The site changed!  Yeah, well… got a bit bored and was climbing the walls from making spreadsheets, charts and reports so I figured I’d mess about with the site just a tad.  Don’t get all worried, though – everything’s still there, including all your favorite image galleries.  Just hit the link for ‘Forums’ and then you’ll be comfortable presented with the good stuff.  I got sick of waiting for phpbb to have a good blog-type front end, so to heck with it and I’m using this as a front-end.  All the family kind of stuff will still occur back in the forums, just FYI.

See ya!
